In an effort to not "delete" anyone's thoughts and ideas, I am moving stuff over here that I took off in the process of cleaning. Please move/change whatever....it is just a formatting nightmare to bring things back from the history.

Notice that there are two sections below...the survey and a key. The key should explain each choice selection and identify resources for support if needed.

re: key--do you think that we need consistency? While I like inserting the word ' justification ' and then the particular source we either have to do the same for all or remove it. Thoughts? gwe

(FYI : I'm editing for clarity and flow... SK)

The first purpose of this survey is to assist Purdue University--Calumet professors and staff in the task of evaluating individuals desiring to conduct online / distance learning courses. The second purpose of this survey is to self-assess the individual's readiness to facilitate instruction in an online environment. - moved, but did not want to delete - melissa

  • Qualities of an effective online / distance educator -- Your aptitude to acquire new technology

Question: We list our two goals as evaluating individuals who want to conduct online/distance courses and self-assess readiness to facilitate instruction. I understand the second goal, but I'm a little unclear on the first: What is it that the evaluation is looking for? potential candidates? I'm just making sure I understand our goal so I don't do the wrong thing! sk
I thought the purpose was assess readiness to develop and facilitate instruction in a distance learning course.
OK. Good! I was trying to reconcile our forum posts, emails, discussion here and the assignment. Thanks for the clarification. :) sk

Question I could not find a home/justification for, but I love the question!!!!!! mel

11. How often would you meet in person with students? Do you meeting in person makes a difference? Why or why not?

This was a very well-written intro to the Teaching Philosophy section, but since there wasn't one for any of the others, I moved it here. mel

The purpose of a university is to teach the whole person to the very best of its ability by offering specific major studies from the classics to engineering and selected professions. It therefore seeks to acquire and retain those individuals with the requisite skills that earnestly seek to do the same.

Things I deleted while editing for clarity and flow:

Key:

3.1 Your medium of choice is probably just fine as a medium for online education

4.1 It is important to figure out right away. Number 1! Some courses will be easier to each online than others. For example, a speech class would be hard/nearly impossible to to do online.

In an effort to clean, but not delete anyone's thoughts, I have relocated our comments, moved items, items up for consideration, items without homes to the following location The X-Files - Instructor Survey

It is a formatting nightmare to pull stuff back in from history, so I wanted to preserve everyone's stuff and their sanity :)

Questions without justifications written in the Key section are highlighted in green. I would also propose combining 1.0 & 2.0 into one topic.
I think we should combine 1 and 2 as well. -EB

Is attitude the same as aptitude? No. Aptitude relates to ability, attitude relates to desire.
I combined 1.1 and 1.2. -gwe Since 1.1 and 1.2 were mine in the first place, no problem; however, aptitude is not attitude and should not be joined. Please reverse it.

Are you referring to qualities of an effective online / distance educator as "aptitude?" Qualities are not the same as abilities. Qualities refer to a person's characteristics (i.e. He is hard-working, willing to try new things, etc.) while aptitude / ability refers to a person's skills (what they've been trained to do or what they've demonstrated that they can do.) Do you still want us to split the first category? sk

I combined 1.0 and 2.0 - mel
